What Earthquake ????

Living in the shadow of a Volcano is natural for us at Eden Park Bed and Breakfast. Thankfully they are all dormant and “sleeping”.
That is more than I can say for the rest of the country. Once again the “Shakey Isles ” are living up to their name. This morning a magnitude 4.8 earthquake has struck the east cape of the North Island
The quake struck at 5.21am, and was centred 50km east of Tolaga Bay, at a depth of 12km.
It came not long after a magnitude 3.6 quake, which struck at 4.40am, 60km east of Tolaga Bay, at a depth of 16km. Between 10.24pm and 6.53am, 12 earthquakes have struck the region. However most have been either weak or unnoticeable. There are no reports of damage or injury. Just a little bit of nervous energy…….
Maybe the hobbits in the Shire are awake now!

New Zealand Rocking and Rolling

At Eden Park Bed and Breakfast we are surrounded by the Auckland Volcanic Plateau. As they are dormant we tend to ignore them and do not think about them. There is nothing nice about an earthquake or a Volcano doing its thing. In New Zealand at the moment we are moving more than we want to be. They call us the land of the long white cloud. If these volcanoes keep popping off that will be a very real component as all the ash and dust in the air will generate that exact case. We now have two volcanos venting ash and who knows if there is more to come. I pray NOT.
This morning a strong earthquake has rocked the Bay of Plenty region .The 4.7 magnitude struck 40 kilometers north-east of Opotiki, near Whakatane, at 7.30am.The quake was at a depth of 40km.
The earthquake comes as ash continues to spew from nearby White Island. The volcanic Island, which lies 48km off the Bay of Plenty coast, was raised to a Volcanic Alert Level 2 after a surveillance camera captured a small eruption from its crater on Sunday.
Another earthquake was reported near Invercargill last night. It struck 160 km west of Tuatapere, north west of Invercargill, at 7.40pm. It was at a depth of 33km.
The quake was followed by a 3.7 magnitude earthquake that struck within 5km of Lyttelton at a depth of eight kilometres.
They don’t call us the Shakey Isles for nothing……

Volcano on Alert.

Eden Park Bed and Breakfast is surrounded by one of the most unique Volcanic Plateaus in the World. The Auckland Volcanic field contains 53 volcanoes and vents. thankfully they are all dormant. Within a 45 minute walk from the property, is Mt Eden (Maungawhau) And it’s a very cool place to see. Well worth the walk .
Further down country the Eastern Bay’s ever-changing volcano ,White Island, is showing signs of unrest once again. Located 49km off the coast of Whakatane, recent changes in activity suggest that the hydrothermal system has become unstable, and as a result the risk has increased.
White Island is a level one volcano, meaning it shows signs of volcano unrest, with the last eruptive activity occurring from March to September, 2000, when it was upgraded to level two.
The volcano’s lake level quickly rose by about 3m to 5m some time between Friday and Saturday last week, exposing a “vigorous” flow of gas and steam into the air.
During the past few weeks there had also been some minor volcanic tremor, including several hours on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday. Last year and earlier this year the lake started to evaporate and exposed steam vents and two large muddy pools.

And now we have some more good news to share with you in the land of Hobbits and Middle Earth.
Scientists have raised the Volcano Alert Level at Mt Tongariro after a series of quakes beneath the volcanic complex. GeoNet said typically Tongariro experienced two such quakes – magnitude 2.5 or less – a year, but there had been more than 20 since July 13.
In a Volcanic Alert Bulletin issued this afternoon, it said the sequence started on July 13 and declined for a period, before restarting on July 18 and increasing in number yesterday. These earthquakes are small (magnitudes <2.5) and have only been well recorded by a few of the seismometers in our permanent network. The earthquakes cluster in a zone between Emerald Crater and the Te Mari craters at 2-7km depth. Tongariro is a massive complex of volcanic cones and craters formed by eruptions from at least 12 vents over more than 275,000 years ago.
GNS Science volcanologist Brad Scott said the increased activity "just means that something has upset Tongariro, and some subterranean process is occurring".
That's all very nice to hear but we have a fault line right through the country and underneath this volcano.....

Auckland's top Restaurants offer Terrific food, served with great charm and efficiency in a smart but probably somewhat informal atmosphere.

Brief overview of upcoming events in Auckland City

A short walk from Eden Park makes us the perfect destination for all their sporting fixtures.
