China Tourism

The Chinese Tourist Market keeps getting displayed under the microscope
Tourist organisations are still looking at ways to reform the tightly controlled Chinese visitor market that is failing to deliver the benefits it should to the wider tourism market
Just under 200,000 Chinese visited New Zealand last year but many are on short trips added on to visits to Australia. These tightly controlled “shopping trips” were not benefiting New Zealand tourism operators or the visitors themselves. Most of the revenue is siphoned off before the visitor gets to New Zealand.
The visitor is told where they’re going, where they’re going to stay, how they’re going to be transported and where they’re going to shop. The agents that organise this totally control the visit.
Allthough these arrivals are good for visitor numbers ,it does nothing to allow the Chinese to experience New Zealanders .
At Eden Park Bed and Breakfast we see a small percentage to Chinese travellers and these are normally FIT from Hong Kong.

International Visitor Arrivals to 3rd Feb 2013
Total visitor arrivals are down 4.5% compared to the same four week period last year.
Ups: Japan 11%, USA 3%, Korea 1%,

Downs: UK -11%, Malaysia -57%, Germany -7%, China -16%, Singapore -6%, Canada -5%

Auckland Vineyard Wins Award

Waiheke Island is one of the Islands in the Hauraki Gulf of Auckland. We send numerous guests from Eden Park Bed and Breakfast down to the ferry to visit it. I now have greater reason to send them there afternoon Stony-ridge Vineyard has received recognition for its red wine, which has topped the list for the best Cabernet Merlot in The Age/ Sydney Morning Herald Good Wine Guide 2013. The Stonyridge Larose 2010 scored 97 points to make it the highest equal scoring red wine in 2013 and finish ahead of all of Australia’s most iconic Cabernet Merlots.
This award is the latest in a long string of international accolades that Stonyridge Larose has achieved since the first vintage back in 1985, further cementing this wine as New Zealand’s greatest Bordeaux Blend, and indeed a wine that can stand proud on the world stage.
This latest recognition is remarkable because it blasts the old generalisation that Australia makes great reds and NZ great whites. This latest acknowledgement confirms Stonyridge as one of the world’s best red wine producers. Last year Australian wine magazine Winestate awarded Stonyridge Larose 2006 five stars, placing it first equal with the legendary Moss Wood Cabernet Sauvignon from Margaret River in its annual awards in 2011, ahead of Chateau Latour 2006 and Chateau Rothschild 2006.
Well done Stonyridge……..

Homeless Meal For Chinese Tour Group

Being in the Accommodation Industry at Eden Park Bed and Breakfast in Auckland ,I like to read the latest reports and keep up with the news pertaining to the Tourism Industry. So when I read about the Auckland City Mission Free Lunch and the Chinese Tour Operator, I have to laugh!
Every year the Auckland City Mission’s Christmas Free lunch is presented to the homeless. This year 2800 people attended.
TVNZ caught a Chinese Tour Operator at a table of 10 Chinese having a free meal. When it’s reporter attempted to speak to the woman the agent fell back on to the wise words of “no speak English”
I would love to know if the Chinese Agent on-charged its tour group for that meal….
With all the hoopla about the Chinese Tourism Market and how we should be learning the basics of conversation , maybe we should be teaching them the meaning of the
English Word ” CHEAP”.

Christmas is coming...

It’s Saturday 22nd Dec at Eden Park Bed and Breakfast. Bit of a rush day here. guests for breakfast and then a dash to Pukekohe (south of Auckland) for the annual family gathering and lunch.
Been very busy at the BnB with guests in and out. Makes one envious of the places that we hear, about; although travel is like a job…. Move on and gotta go….
We just had Guy check out last night and he had just finished a 2 month cycling trip around NZ. He had a great sun tan to go back to Germany with but on Tuesday he was back at his job in the Bank.
Kinda feel sorry for him..
I have a painting plan this summer. I have erected scaffolding on the west side to make the high rise gable easier and safer. I remember the last time I did this and thought never again… And here I am again.

International Visitor Arrivals to 9th December 2012
Total visitor arrivals are down 1% compared to the same four week period last year.

Linnies Flower

We had Linnie and Peter from Amberfields Bed and Breakfast stay with at Eden Park Bed and Breakfast the other night. Everyone had bit of the Merry, Merry over dinner. They were lucky in they could chill out the next day and I had to drag myself out and go to work. But the reason of this post is to show you my new Lilly. It came out when they were here so this is Linnies flower…

Auckland needs rail Tunnel

At Eden Park Bed and Breakfast we are totally in favour for increased services to motorists in Auckland. A 700-page Government-ordered study says without the proposed $2.4 million central rail link the city will be crippled by serious congestion and growth of the downtown area will be stunted.
Mayor Len Brown told Radio New Zealand’s Morning Report programme that at some point everyone will have to agree that the work is critical.
“This is an all-agency report delivering the appropriate answers to the minister and to the Government saying that the city rail link … is the answer and is three or four times better than any of the other 45 options that were looked at.”
He said government officials need to realise that Auckland’s transport demands need to be solved if the city is to thrive.
The council has begun planning work for the tunnel even though funding is uncertain.
Lets hope that we will see common sense come to those we elect……..

IRB under 20's in Auckland

NEWS FLASH:

Eden Park will be the Host Stadium to the under-20s rugby world championship in 2014.
The International Rugby Board this morning announced that the annual IRB Junior World Championship will be held in Auckland in June 2014
The annual championship, which will see 11 countries playing it out for the top title, began in 2008 and has never been hosted in New Zealand.
Since 2008 New Zealand has won every year, except for this year when host country South Africa took out the top spot.
The Government has invested $1.45 million into the event, which has been matched by the Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development. It is expected that the event will bring $8million in economic benefits to the city.
At Eden Park Bed and Breakfast , which is 250m from the stadium , I expect we will be having the same type of interest shown from the RWC 2011.
We welcome enquires from interested sports patrons . It’s better to be early than late for accommodation.

What Earthquake ????

Living in the shadow of a Volcano is natural for us at Eden Park Bed and Breakfast. Thankfully they are all dormant and “sleeping”.
That is more than I can say for the rest of the country. Once again the “Shakey Isles ” are living up to their name. This morning a magnitude 4.8 earthquake has struck the east cape of the North Island
The quake struck at 5.21am, and was centred 50km east of Tolaga Bay, at a depth of 12km.
It came not long after a magnitude 3.6 quake, which struck at 4.40am, 60km east of Tolaga Bay, at a depth of 16km. Between 10.24pm and 6.53am, 12 earthquakes have struck the region. However most have been either weak or unnoticeable. There are no reports of damage or injury. Just a little bit of nervous energy…….
Maybe the hobbits in the Shire are awake now!
