Mt Eden Volcano

At 196 meters tall, Mount Eden (Maungawhau ) is the highest volcano in Auckland. From the summit, you can enjoy spectacular views of the city and its harbours. It consists of two overlapping scoria cones which erupted in close succession about 28,000 years ago.

A large, well-preserved crater, some 50 metres deep, is contained within the summit cone.

Maungawhau means ‘mountain of the whau tree’ and was one of the largest and most elaborate Māori pā (fortified settlement) in the region. On the outer slopes are numerous flat terraces used for defence, living and working. Pits for crop storage can still be seen today. The crater is sacred to Māori and must not be entered.

Mt Eden (Maungawhau) is one of Auckland’s most visited volcanoes with over one million visitors each year. Many walkways lead to the summit and spectacular views over the city and Waitematā Harbour. Some tracks are stony and steep. Be sure to stick to formed paths.

We recommend that all guests take a walk up Mt Eden Volcano. The overview of the city is well worth it. It will take an hour to walk from Eden Park Bed and Breakfast to the summit.

Auf unserem Neuseeland Trip eines der Besten B&Bs in denen wir waren. Die Zimmer sind sehr gehoben ausgestattet. Gibt einen sehr coolen Vibe. Es wird ein fantastisches Frühstück serviert. Alles in allem: sehr gut. Ich kann es nur empfehlen!

We've just spent two nights here and it was the perfect place to be. Marleen and Anthony are amazing hosts! Very open, welcoming and knowledgeable about great places to visit, eat and shop. Super close to Eden park so we could happily walk to our event and very close but not too close to the city. The home is absolutely stunning, very clean and well kept with a great deck on either end of the house and a beautiful garden to enjoy in the backyard. Breakfast each morning was so elegantly laid out, the food was divine and the company of travellers also staying here made for great conversations. Their pup, Pippa and cat, Louie are very friendly and I must say, very quiet too. We've come home feeling very relaxed and happy with our weekend away and would happily book in again in future!
