At Eden Park Bed and Breakfast we are involved in a campaign of building and renovation. We are installing a Bay Window onto the front room and hanging new wallpaper in various rooms. The window was saved from a building that was destroyed in the Christchurch earthquake. It’s our little bit of saving a piece of Christchurch history….
On the tourism front ; The Luxury Travel Company, Virtuoso (a luxury travel network with 7200 agents worldwide) is finding that New Zealand is increasingly becoming the No 1 travel destination for the rich and the famous.
Fuelled by the popularity of the Lord of the Rings films, New Zealand has become a standalone destination in its own right rather than being tacked on to an Australia trip for a few days.
Figures released for their 2013 New Zealand travel bookings show client transactions of $32 billion were up 198 per cent during the past 12 months.
Hot List of Countries:
1. New Zealand (+ 196%)
2. Chile (+ 103%)
3. Indonesia (+ 103%)
4. Hungary (+ 86%)

This is all good for operators within New Zealand’s Tourism Industry.
Living in the shadow of a Volcano is natural for us at Eden Park Bed and Breakfast. Thankfully they are all dormant and “sleeping”.
That is more than I can say for the rest of the country. Once again the “Shakey Isles ” are living up to their name. This morning a magnitude 4.8 earthquake has struck the east cape of the North Island
The quake struck at 5.21am, and was centred 50km east of Tolaga Bay, at a depth of 12km.
It came not long after a magnitude 3.6 quake, which struck at 4.40am, 60km east of Tolaga Bay, at a depth of 16km. Between 10.24pm and 6.53am, 12 earthquakes have struck the region. However most have been either weak or unnoticeable. There are no reports of damage or injury. Just a little bit of nervous energy…….
Maybe the hobbits in the Shire are awake now!
At Eden Park Bed and Breakfast , we are always in favour of increased activity at Eden Park Stadium , so i am upbeat about the Auckland council cost-cutting move that will see the Warriors make a permanent move to Eden Park .
Eden Park , the city’s largest stadium has often been touted as the Warriors future home, with the team having played their opening matches of the last two seasons there.
Bring the Games on!
Friday Morning at Eden Park Bed and Breakfast in Auckland. Breakfast for the guests is finished and just waithing for check-outs and then into the room turnovers. So… Its coffee time and a quick update on the news of the day. I see that the West Coast of New Zealand got a shaky start to their morning today when a magnitude 5.3 earthquake rocked the West Coast and Otago this morning. The quake struck at 7.38am, and was centred 40km southwest of Haast, 70km northwest of Wanaka, at a depth of 5km.
The quake was reported to have been felt in Wanaka, Alexandra, and Lake Hawea, and as far away as Westport and Dunedin.
Woopie doo…. Great way to start a Friday!
Monday Morning at Eden Park Bed and Breakfast in Auckland. Breakfast is over and onto the rooms next. We have checkouts and checkins . But first a coffee and a read of the newspaper.
I read that we are still rocking and rolling with three minor earthquakes been recorded in parts of New Zealand today.A 3.2 shake was felt in Canterbury at 10:19am, 10km east of Christchurch and 10km deep. At 10:31am a small quake of 2.1 magnitude was recorded within 5km of Cromwell in central Otago, at a 5km depth.mThe third quake, felt at 12:30pm, measured 3.7 and shook northern Hawke’s Bay. It was located 30km south of Wairoa at a depth of 33km.
Another day in New Zealand….
At Eden Park Bed and Breakfast we are surrounded by the Auckland Volcanic Plateau. As they are dormant we tend to ignore them and do not think about them. There is nothing nice about an earthquake or a Volcano doing its thing. In New Zealand at the moment we are moving more than we want to be. They call us the land of the long white cloud. If these volcanoes keep popping off that will be a very real component as all the ash and dust in the air will generate that exact case. We now have two volcanos venting ash and who knows if there is more to come. I pray NOT.
This morning a strong earthquake has rocked the Bay of Plenty region .The 4.7 magnitude struck 40 kilometers north-east of Opotiki, near Whakatane, at 7.30am.The quake was at a depth of 40km.
The earthquake comes as ash continues to spew from nearby White Island. The volcanic Island, which lies 48km off the Bay of Plenty coast, was raised to a Volcanic Alert Level 2 after a surveillance camera captured a small eruption from its crater on Sunday.
Another earthquake was reported near Invercargill last night. It struck 160 km west of Tuatapere, north west of Invercargill, at 7.40pm. It was at a depth of 33km.
The quake was followed by a 3.7 magnitude earthquake that struck within 5km of Lyttelton at a depth of eight kilometres.
They don’t call us the Shakey Isles for nothing……
